There is a place in a garment for hanger straps, this just isn’t it. This strapless dress undoubtedly needs them for transport and storage. Mistake #1 is putting these in a place where they can be seen from the outside. This ends up frustrating people to the point that they cut them out, then realize they have no way to hang their dress on a regular hanger.
Solution = putting the hanger straps further down in the garment at the lining side seam.

I love these shoes but like everything in my life these days that doesn’t matter for much. I grew up in Long Island in Westbury and also lived in Gramercy, NYC. I went from that being the only world I ever knew, loved or cared about. A world filled with the best fashion, the most scrumptious food and the fun that never ended to the cornfields. How you may ask did this happen to you (with a voice of total sympathy and disbelief)? I have one answer for you 9/11. When 9/11 hit I had just resigned from my production assistant position for an activewear company you may know called Everlast. I had set my sights on opening a visual merchandising company that would provide window displays to stores in LI with no visual team. I was ready to become the entrepreneur I was meant to be but then the buildings crumbled and so did my aspirations. All that mattered after that in the devastatingly sad days to follow was family and a life with them.
I was always so busy working in the garment industry gaining my experience in the only field I’ve ever known and loved. I hadn’t lived near my mom or grandma in 10 years because they moved to Florida when I was 16 (my father passed when I was 18). So I worked and I worked hard two jobs at a time to make sure I was going to make it in the tough business that is fashion.
At that point I had worked my way up prior to my two year stint at Everlast to Visuals Manager of Contempo Casuals in three of their NYC stores and I loved Visual Merchandising. I thought I was going to be the next Simon Doonan.
But God had different plans as only He does. And I listened and obeyed.
I moved with my grandma from NY to live near my mom whose husband had gotten a job transfer to Bloomington, Il. It seemed like one of those once in a lifetime opportunities and it was. We moved 10/2001 and my grandma passed in 12/2003. That’s the sad news…but the amazing thing is on 10/13/2001 just 13 days in Central Illinois I met the man who a year later would become my husband. He was from an even smaller town 30 minutes South of Blm called Clinton (pop 7500). Yes my life is truly Green Acres! A year after our wedding he would give me the greatest job I had ever known becoming a mom. So grandma (my favorite person ever) got to see me get married and have my first child. Fate…
What’s a fashion girl to do?
Well start her own sewing company of course! Actually it didn’t start off that way. I had ideas of my own while God had other plans Again! So I opened my window display company in Central Il and provided fab NY window displays to these mom and pop stores and it was a hit! I had lots of regulars and set them up on monthly window displays it was just as I had imagined it. I bought my very first sewing machine just so I could sew backdrops for my window displays. Little did I know that once I got pregnant I would have to give it all up. It just got too hard to climb in and out of the windows, building and hauling the intricate props I created.
One dream dashed but another was on its way.
So I stayed at home when my son was born and started to sew curtains for people. It was a natural jump from the backdrops and there was a need but I hated it. I cried during my first project as the deadline neared. It was too much pressure and those darn pinched pleated drapes were way more technical than I was willing to admit. So after much tears and labor I finished them but knew my career in home decor would be short lived.
Then I had a wake up moment! You’re a New York girl remember!? You live for fashion what are you doing? You can sew a seam now so why not make/alter clothes? And that’s exactly how Koalaty Displays became Sew Koalaty. I went back to school at Illinois State University and got my BS in Fashion Design and I’ve never looked back! Since then I have been doing alterations and custom clothing for the Central Illinois area and have been loving being an entrepreneur doing what I truly love. So everything sounds great right? Wrong!
Why?
These shoes that’s why! No where to wear my designer duds, no fabulous NYC events anymore, no 4 star restaurants to die over. What’s a NY girl to do? Become a huge fashion designer of course and make my name known. How? God gave me the answer! NBC’s Fashion Star! It’s my chance to get it all back and show the world what I’m capable of. Please God for once let’s agree this is my destiny. Thanks! Love ya xoxo
